Unsuprisingly, given the way that Facebook has turned the seemingly content Myspace platform on its head and has given users a new way of social networking, Myspace has had enough. Announced at the Web2.0 conference yesterday, it is now clear that Myspace are going to be opening up their developer platform. This may seem very familiar and of course it does, because this is exactly what Facebook has done in the development of its application platform.
What this does mean is that Facebook will now have some serious competition for development which was not there before. In reality, it was the only thing or the natural thing for Myspace to do to combat the Facebook phenomena. Mashable reported yesterday on a Compete report which highlighted a 37% growth down to Facebook Apps. If Myspace can achieve this then the Social Net Cold War is back on again.
